An Education : Lucky Mad Player (Poker)

Posted under Rooms on June 18th, 2008

Let me establish these things, when I say "education", I am referring to whatever moral lesson you could get from this little tale. If you could not get any, what the hell, it would be fun. His name is Olin, mid-30s, and before he quit his work to concentrate on full-time gambling, he used to be an insurance policy salesman. So, let me start my An Education : Lucky Mad Player (Poker) story. Well, Olin is one of the maddest (read: crazy in a not-destructive but funny way) poker players I've ever met, one of the luckiest too. Example of his madness (just one among a thousand acts)- years ago, he and I were in the same poker game, and there was a drop-dead gorgeous blonde who obviously had the hots for Olin. In a crucial part of the game where 3/4 of Olin's bankroll was on the line, he was one-on-one against this lady. The blonde was thinking whether to call or to fold, and Olin blurted out, "if you fold, I'll take you to dinner in the most expensive restaurant you could think of". The lady looked at us (the rest of the guys) and asked us if Olin's word could be trusted, nobody spoke. Out of friendship, I muttered, "If you confiscate his car keys right now, he could be trusted"- laughter all around, and in fairness, Olin laughed too. Well, the blonde did ask for the keys, Olin threw the keys on the table, the lady folded, and they went out to dinner. (But not before getting a 1 grand loan from me, oh well). Here is the lucky part of this An Education : Lucky Mad Player (Poker) narration, he really is blessed with getting lucky in the critical times. One time at a tournament (NOT WSOP), he was down to just 3 measly chips when he made a comeback worthy of the books. He fought on as though his life depended on making it to the money bracket, and he made one cute bluff after another. At the Finals table, there were just 3 of them remaining, and one of the 2 opponents was very sure he was bluffing again. Only that time, Olin had a monster hand and won that particular pot. Still, he landed 2nd, the chip leader was a fire-breathing 200-year old veteran who probably taught Stu Ungar decades ago. Last time I saw Olin was about 3 months ago, and he told me that the 2 of us should hang out at our old casino, for old times' sake. I'd prefer an expensive dinner, his tab of course. An Education : Lucky Mad Player (Poker)...he has a 6-year old son, I hope the education would be there for the kid, with the luck, MINUS all the madness of the father (but that is wishful thinking I guess).
